Has anyone heard any of yet? Are they new masterings? How's the sound quality?
Hi Anonymous, just rename the file and add.rar, and then you can easily unrar it. May 19, 2012 at 5:13 PM; Anonymous said. I just wanted to share with everyone that Divine Songs can be found here: July 21, 2012.
Universal Consciousness / Lord Of Lords by Alice Coltrane 2. / Dear John C. By Elvin Jones 3. Village Of The Pharoahs / Wisdom Through Music by Pharoah Sanders 4.
/ There Will Never Be Another You by Sonny Rollins 5. Inception / Reaching Fourth by McCoy Tyner Trio 6. Statements / Jazz 'n' Samba by Milt Jackson 7. Meets Coleman Hawkins / And John Coltrane by Duke Ellington 8.
Love Cry / The Last Album by Albert Ayler 9. Today And Now / Desafinado by Coleman Hawkins 10. For Losers / Kwanza by Archie Shepp 11. The Sorcerer / More Sorcery by Gabor Szabo 12. For Members Only / Great Scott!! By Shirley Scott Trio 13. Poinciana Revisited / Freeflight by Ahmad Jamal 14.
Jazz Messengers!!!!! / A Jazz Message by Art Blakey 15. Soul Trombone / Cabin In The Sky by Curtis Fuller. I bought Elvin Jones Illumination! / Dear John C and have an earlier mastering of Dear JC from 1993. The new one is different and a bit louder and brighter, but sounds good to my ears.
Some of you here may not like it, but I don't hear anything offensive. The odd thing is that the running order is different on the two CD's. I don't know which is correct. There's also a bonus track on the 1993 issue. I know Waveforms are 'uncool' these days, but I think this is reasonably informative and suggests some peak-limiting in the right channel in the second half of the track.
Top: 1993 Bottom: 2011. Click to expand.I uploaded both versions on my iTunes so I could go back and forth quickly. I didn't do an extensive A/B comparison and I'm not sure I'd be able to quantify and characterize what I was hearing anyway. The volume on the new 2-fer is louder than the 1993 master and there is audible tape hiss when played at high volume. I also noted some low frequency hum on one track, but again, I was listening at relatively high volume going back and forth between the two versions.
I think it's safe to say that there is no noise reduction applied here. I will certainly be picking up the Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp sets next, followed by the Art Blakey and Coleman Hawkins. Even as imports these are a good buy. What's the packaging like on these? Are the complete cover art and liner notes included or is this purely a 'budget' series. I'm tempted by the Coltrane, Ayler, Shepp and Sanders sets, but I paid a flippin' FORTUNE for the Japanese CDs and, while there's always the chance that these use superior source tapes, they don't seem to be advertising any sonic superiority.
I'm betting a large chunk of the potential customers for these already shelled out for the myriad Japanese issues over the past couple of decades (or just found used LPs) and it's kinda odd that, apart from getting TWO albums on ONE disc (assuming you don't already own one of them) I'm not getting the logic of the marketing here. Click to expand.Perfect example. I've never owned the original LP to compare it to, but I have the Japanese UCCI 3008 edition.
When I listen to it, I can't help but wonder 'is that how it's supposed to sound?' (Marion Brown's 'Geechee Recollections' on MVCZ 120 is another one I'm not sure of, but it's not included in this reissue series) Maybe it's odd mastering decisions, maybe it's just the safety copy (?) of the tape they used, maybe it's just my overactive imagination, but I'm still not taking it at face value. Some of those Japanese Impulse! Titles just don't quite sound right. Of course, there's also no reason to assume that Universal US isn't just copying these editions from the Japanese discs.
Or possible using even worse tapes or even odder mastering decisions. It's tough not having any faith. Perfect example. I've never owned the original LP to compare it to, but I have the Japanese UCCI 3008 edition.
